Dr Spyros Bakalis

Dr Bakalis is a consultant obstetrician and sub-specialist in Maternal and Fetal Medicine. He completed his undergraduate training at King’s College London Medical School, whilst concurrently obtaining a scholarship for a degree in Clinical Genetics for Birth Defects’.

Dr Bakalis completed his general postgraduate training in London and the West Midlands, working in some of the largest and busiest hospitals in the country. During this time, he developed his management of both low-risk and high-risk pregnancies, taking a great interest in balancing women’s choices with safety.

Following this, he undertook his research at the Harris Birthright Research Centre for Fetal Medicine, King’s College London, where he published widely in the prediction of small-for-gestational-age babies and was awarded an MD for his work.

He was subsequently accredited by the RCOG with his subspecialty in Maternal and Fetal Medicine following his training at University College Hospital London. During this period, he undertook training in all aspects of fetal and maternal medicine. He carried out many chorionic villous samplings (CVS) and amniocentesis and partook in the specialised fetal cardiac, surgical and twin clinics, whilst from a maternal side was heavily involved in the diabetes service.

His dedication to excellent teaching and training was reflected in his development and delivery of the unique ‘Labour Ward Theory Course’. In addition, he continued his research into third trimester ultrasound and set-up the template for improved postnatal care.

Dr Bakalis was appointed to Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital in 2017 with a major role in the fetal medicine unit. He carries out a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic services for a variety of fetal medicine cases, maintaining a special interest in fetuses with growth complications, brain anomalies and placental abnormalities.

He has developed the placenta accreta service whilst also setting up a specialised clinic for babies with growth issues. Dr Bakalis is the lead Obstetrician for the Maternal Cardiac services, caring for women with an array of complex heart conditions. He was also lead for Maternal Oncology and gained expertise in managing women with cancers through pregnancy.

Dr Spyros Bakalis is currently Head of Obstetrics and has served as the college tutor which permitted him to continue his passion for teaching and training junior colleagues. He was also the Obstetric lead for digital services and was involved in introducing new software and technology to the department.

He maintains a strong interest in research and continues to author a range of articles and book chapters. Alongside this, he teaches undergraduate and postgraduates both theoretical and practical skills.

Dr Bakalis understands that many women want bespoke personalised pregnancy plans and continuity of care throughout the entire pregnancy journey. As a private obstetrician in London, he aims to deliver high-quality, personalised maternity care, at the same time aspiring to maintain the highest safety standards for both mother and baby. This begins with a thorough history at the first meeting and the implementation of a flexible plan, taking into account any pre-existing health conditions.

Clinical appointment dates for blood tests, blood pressure measurements and ultrasound scans dates are fixed. Ultrasound scans from 20 weeks onwards can be booked with Dr Bakalis as a one-stop session, with the antenatal appointment taking place alongside the scan. Delivery usually takes place at either St Thomas’ hospital, taking advantage of the hospital’s outstanding maternity unit, and on-site world class allied healthcare team or the luxurious Portland Hospital.

Women opting for a private delivery can take full advantage of the exceptional postnatal care in the hospital’s private suite. On discharge, Dr Bakalis can recommend high quality private midwives, breast feeding specialists and Paediatricians for advice and review in the postnatal period.
